Dear Vashon Friends,

Vashon Community Care has a long and proud history of caring for people who have not been able to care for themselves, regardless of their ethnicity, sexual orientation or socio-economic background. I, and the entire staff at VCC, are honored to carry on that tradition, and we are blessed to have the financial and moral support of so many of you. Earlier this month, we raised more than $25,000 for our residents who have outlived their resources through The Swamp Bottom Jamboree that Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda-Been, a video that took the place of our annual fundraiser. The month before, we raised more than $20,000 for our Employee Fund to underwrite continuing education for our dedicated staff, many of whom cannot afford to pay for professional development. Clearly, social justice is important to you, our donors, and I want to assure you that it is equally important to all of us at VCC.

We believe that — to truly mature as a society — we must talk honestly and openly with one another about our differences and our shared values around equity and inclusion. If we, as a nation, are sincere about change, all Americans must join the discourse. In the spirit of contributing to this national conversation, VCC will work to incorporate ongoing presentations from a diversity of voices in the calendar of events for our residents and continuing education for staff .  As this programming evolves, we will share what we are learning and the difference that it makes day to day.

Vashon Community Care is one of 14 senior living communities in the Transforming Age family of services. For more than 50 years, Transforming Age (formerly Presbyterian Retirement Communities Northwest) has served people of all ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. Today, Transforming Age is committed, more than ever, to improving lives, regardless of gender, origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or the color of one’s skin.

Our journey toward a more equitable society will be a long and sometimes painful one. We at VCC are ready to get on board and start the conversation. Please contact me anytime. I am always happy to talk with our Vashon neighbors.

With gratitude for all you do for our residents and staff,

Wendy Kleppe
Executive Director
